Honda S2000 has remained largely unchanged since the time it was launched, way back in April 1999. Offcourse it has been freshened up with new tail lights, LED’s and the stuff, the basic shape has remained the same. The car was launched with a 2000cc DOHC VTEC screamer that belted out 240 bhp’s at an amazing 8300 rpm!!! The engine was redlined at 9000 rpm the most for any car! The high revving engine held the title for highest specific power per unit volume of any mass produced naturally aspirated engine. The compact and lightweight engine was mounted entirely behind the front axle for the perfect 50:50 weight distribution.
In 2004 a larger version of the earlier 2000cc engine was introduced in the US market, with the new engine displacing 2200cc’s. The power produced was the same but torque incresed by 6% to 220 nm @ 6200 rpm compared to 207 nm @ 7500 rpm for the original.
According to a few Japanese magazines, the S2000 replacement is coming in 2010 with one of them publishing a rendering of the expected successor. Rumours also say, that the next generation S2000 will come with a choice of a 4 cylinder 2.4 litre engine generating 250 bhp and a larger 3.5 litre V6 putting around 350 bhp. Will it be a worthy successor…. only time will tell.
